Australia in the Vietnam War era Part 3-Constructing History
Mrs Bobbie Walker lived in the north of Sydney through out the Vietnam War era. The people that she was close to did not have much involvement in the war. To these people Vietnam was a very far off, foreign issue. She now knows that the Aussies were pulled into the war by the Americans.
Even though not many people knew what the war was about, most of the people Mrs Walker knew were against it. This was because of the war telecasts, and the military ads that showed graphically the horrors of the war.
During the war, most of the true facts were hidden from the public. No one heard anything that the government didn’t want you to hear. After the war, Mrs Walker found things out that she would never have believed true, such as Russian people being told America was a poor country, to try and show that communism worked.
Mrs Walker was never involved in any of the protests, and believes it is a waste of time to protest. She also believes that a democracy is the best form of government, believing that there is no need to be equal, and that one person should always be the boss.
She doesn’t like the communism view, and believes that if you are smart or particularly gifted, then you should be able to go as high in society as you are able to.
This view of one person from the Vietnam War era. One of countless people’s views on the war. This is a primary source recount from someone living in the time period.
